Chapter Fourteen
We lay on the bed talking. He slipped the words into the conversation.
“I love you, ya know,” Chad said, staring into my eyes.
I sat up and swung my legs over the edge of the bed, my back to him.
He touched my back, but I didn’t know what to say.
“Chad, please. Not this again.” I finally acknowledged his feelings.
“You don’t have to say it back, but I need you to know how I feel. I lost you all those years ago by lying to myself, and to you, and I don’t want it to happen again.”
My heart sank into the pit of my stomach. “I can’t give you what you want – you have to understand that.”
“I know, but it doesn’t stop me wishing.”
“Why waste your life wishing for something that’ll never be?”
“Because it’s all I have left, Zane.”
I turned to face him – the look of hurt on his face wasn’t something I ever expected to see
“Please don’t look at me like that.” I couldn’t stand to see the pain in his eyes.
“I’m not looking at you like anything.”
But he was lying, I knew it.
“I don’t love you like that – not anymore. I’m sorry, but the love I felt for you died when you shut me out years ago. I moved on and married Jenna, and I’ll never leave her.”
“Then what are we doing?” he hissed.
“For me, fun with my best friend.”
He sniggered. “So, I’m just a fuck?”
“You’re my best friend and I wouldn’t change meeting you again for anything, but I’ve never given you the impression this is anything more than fun. I love you, but I’m not...”
Chad interrupted me. “Save it for somebody else.”
He jumped off the bed and picked his jeans up from the floor.
“Where’re you going?”
“Anywhere you’re not.” He wouldn’t even look at me.
“Come on, I don’t wanna argue with you. I’ve always been honest with you.”
“Doesn’t make it any easier, does it?” He looked at me, and for the first time, I could see his vulnerability.
He stepped into his jeans, pulled them up and fastened them. Pulling the knitted jumper over his head then bending down to pull his trainers on, he grabbed his bag and stormed toward the door.
“Chad, please,” I shouted, stunned the mood had changed so quickly. “Come on, let’s talk about it.”
“Go home and talk to your wife.”
His words cut me to the bone and I watched as he opened the door and slammed it behind him.
I sat on the bed, naked, incredulous.
